The Basics of Refrigeration and Measuring Heat and Temperature
Air conditioners (and furnaces) are specified by the number of British Thermal Units (BTUs) required to cool or remove moisture from a space. Depending on the room and the outside air, a 5000 BTU air conditioner could reduce the temperature by 1 degree or 15 degrees F. It is totally dependent on the thermostat to know when to cycle off.
The point is that heat and temperature are not the same. They even have the different units: BTU's or degrees. It is important to know the difference.
